How to break the habit of comparing yourself to others

Most of us struggled with it most of our lives. We’ve lived most of our lives comparing ourselves to others, and as we got older, we started comparing other metrics: job title, income level, house size, and worldly achievements. Once we start down that road, we never find an end.

The inclination to compare ourselves to others is as human as any other emotion. Indeed, we are not alone in this experience. But it is a decision that only steals joy from our lives. And it is a habit with numerous faults.



Don´t compare yourself to others by following these 5 golden rules:

1. BE AWARE OF YOUR OWN ACHIEVEMENTS

Doesn´t matter your title, whether you´re an actor, musician, lawyer, plumber, or mother, you have a unique perspective strengthened by unique experiences and unique capabilities. You can love, help, and provide. You have everything you need to achieve great things in your little share of the world. With that opportunity in front of you, be aware of your past accomplishments and find the motivation to pursue new ones. 

2. PURSUE YOUR DREAMS

Some of the greatest riches in this world are hidden from sight: love, modesty, compassion, selflessness, kindness. Amongst these important pursuits, there is no measurement. Seek them above everything else and detach yourself fully from society’s definition of success.


3. COMPETE LESS AND APPRECIATE MORE

There may be times when competition is relevant, but life is not one of them. We have all been thrown together at this precise moment on this exact planet. And the earlier we stop competing against each other to “win,” the quicker we can start working together to figure it out. The first and most essential step in overcoming the fixation of competition is to admire and honor the contribution of others.

4. GRATITUDE AND MORE GRATITUDE

Gratitude always pushes us to appreciate the good things we already have in our world. Small day to day matters will become significant if we let it be. Being grateful can improve your daily life and improve our workplace happiness like you wouldn’t believe. Focus more on what really matters in your life and break the vicious cycle of comparison. 

5. REMEBER YOURSELF THAT NO ONE IS PERFECT

While centering on the negatives is rarely as helpful as concentrating on the positives, there is a precious moment to be found remembering that nobody is perfect and nobody is living an ideal life. Success always requires an obstacle to be surmounted. And everybody is suffering through their own, whether you are close enough to know it or not.

With so many adverse effects inherent in comparison, it is a shame we ever take part in it. But the fight is real for most of us. Luckily, it does not need to be. And the freedom found in comparing less is totally worth the effort.
